HERNE is a village situated to the north of Sturry. Herne Street, or Town, is situated about the centre of the parish, and is in the lathe of St. Augustine, hundred of Bleangate, and Blean union, East Kent; seven miles from Canterbury, and three north of Sturry. The church of St. Martin is a handsome edifice. The Rev. James May, M.A., vicar; Rev. George William Temple, curate. The population in 1851 was 1,459.
The workhouse of Blean union is on Herne Common, Beltinge, or Bellinge Haw or How, half a mile east; Hampton, three miles N.W. on the coast; Thornton, or Strood, are boroughs or hamlets; Northwood, one mile N.W.; Huntersfostel, Eddington, Sharpershall Hill, Broamefield, Colewood, Westbrook, Blocksole, and Underdown, are places in the parish.

nearest Money Order Office is at Herne Bay.
